3 Basic Macramé Knots for Beginners

Stop getting tangled and get the basics right with these 3 easy macramé knots for beginners! We’ll show you how to do a basic Cow Hitch, Square Knot and Wrap Knot to help you get started on some beautiful macramé work!
To further your skills, learn how to tie double half hitch knots here!
  • Step 1The Cow Hitch (steps 1 to 4). This is a common knot used when beginning a project to attach the cord to a ring or stick.
  • Step 2Fold your length of cord in half and place the folded loop end behind your split ring.
  • Step 3Pull the loose ends up and through the loop you just created.
  • Step 4Pull the ends down tight to secure the cow hitch knot. Easy right?
  • Step 5The Square Knot (steps 5 to 10). Square knots are commonly used in macramé to create patterns in your work. You will need at least 4 cords to tie a square knot.
  • Step 6Take the left cord and bring it over the top and to the right of the centre cords placing it under the final cord on the right.
  • Step 7Fold the right cord under the centre cords then up and out through the loop created by the left cord.
  • Step 8Pull them tight to create the first half of the square knot.
  • Step 9This time take the right cord and bring it over the top and to the left of the centre cords placing it under the final cord on the left.
  • Step 10Fold the left cord under the centre cords then up and out through the loop created by the right cord.
  • Step 11Pull tightly to secure and complete the square knot!
  • Step 12The Wrap Knot (steps 12 to 17). The wrap knot is commonly used at the beginning or end of a hanging pot project and is used to secure a bundle of cords together.
  • Step 13Hold all of the cords together vertically.
  • Step 14Using a seperate length of cord, create a ‘loop’ and lay it down the centre of the bundle.
  • Step 15Start to wrap the long end around and around the bundle of cords, including the loop you just created, leaving the short end peeking out the top. Be sure to wrap tightly and hold in place using your thumb.
  • Step 16When you have wrapped almost to the bottom of the loop, thread the end through the loop.
  • Step 17Pull upwards on the end peeking out the top to tuck the bottom end up into the wrap and then trim the ends to complete!
