Mosaic Disco Ball

Prepare to have the funkiest classroom around! Your students will love making their own disco ball to create a brilliant light effect around the room.

 Warning: This craft may cause spontaneous classroom dance parties!

 

Please note: You will also need water, protective gloves and some paper towels to complete this activity.

  • Step 1Cut a length of spaghetti string at least 60cm long and tie a big double knot in one end. Adult supervision is recommended when using scissors.
  • Step 2Use a skewer to make a small hole on the top of your decofoam ball. Fill the hole with tacky glue and use your skewer to push the knot in the string into the hole. Allow to dry.
  • Step 3Use tacky glue to stick mirrored tiles onto your decofoam ball. Cover as much of the surface as you can but don’t worry about the small gaps – we will fill them with grout later! Allow the glue to dry.
  • Step 4Making sure you are following the safety guidelines on the pack, add about 3 tablespoons of grout powder into a bowl or container. Mix in small amounts of water until it has the consistency of gritty playdough. Stir in 1 teaspoon of silver acrylic paint to colour the grout and make it the consistency of toothpaste. You may need to add more water or grout powder until you have the right consistency.
  • Step 5Protect your work surface with a splash mat and put on some gloves before using the grout. Use a squeegee to fill the gaps of your disco ball with grout.
  • Step 6When all the gaps are filled, use a damp sponge to wipe any excess grout from the surface of the tiles. Allow the grout to set for at least 24 hours.
  • Step 7Once the grout has set, use a damp sponge to clean up any leftover grout residue on the tiles. Wipe the surface dry with a paper towel.
  • Step 8Your Mosaic Disco Ball is now ready to display. Hang your disco ball in a sunny spot and enjoy the light show!
