STEAM: Disappearing Colour

Explore the world of refraction and stun your friends by making the colour disappear from a drawing!

Please note: For this experiment you will also need a glass of water and a resealable bag.

  • Step 1Cut a rectangle of white cover paper that will fit inside a small resealable bag. Adult supervision is recommended when using scissors.
  • Step 2Use coloured markers to create a simple design on the paper rectangle.
  • Step 3Place the paper inside the bag and seal it shut, pushing out any trapped air as you do so. Use a black permanent pen to draw an outline of your design onto the bag and add any extra details you’d like. Allow to dry.
  • Step 4Begin to submerge your bag into a glass of water. What do you observe?
  • Step 5As you submerge the bag into the water you should see that the colour seems to disappear completely! Make sure you’re viewing your image from above the glass. Change the angle at which you are looking and record what happens. As light hits water it refracts and reflects at different angles. Light also travels differently through various materials as colours are absorbed or reflected.
