Step 1Roll 200 - 250g of clay into a flat oval to create a base. You may need more clay depending on the size you would like your base to be. Use a small amount of water on your finger to smooth out the surface. Insert five matchsticks into the clay as shown. If your base is larger you might like to add more matchsticks. These will become the stems for your mushrooms. Set the clay aside to dry for at least 24 hours.
Step 2Cut out the number of egg wells you need for your mushroom tops from an egg carton tray. Adult supervision is recommended when using scissors. Trim around the edges of each well so it looks neat. Keep the remaining tray and scrap pieces for later steps. Paint your mushroom tops with your choice of paint colours. Allow to dry. Paint small white circles onto your mushroom tops and allow to dry.
Step 3Mix a small amount of yellow, red and blue with white paint to create a skin tone. Adjust the amount of each colour as needed to create your desired skin tone. Paint two mini popsticks and a large wooden bead using this paint mixture. Allow to dry.
Step 4Cut another two wells from your egg carton and trim them so they have four points as shown. Keep the remaining tray and scrap pieces for a later step. Paint each well with your choice of colours and allow to dry. Insert one egg well into the other and secure using a glue gun. Adult supervision is recommended when using a glue gun. Allow to dry. This will form the body of your fairy.
Step 5Glue the wooden bead to the top point of the egg wells, making sure the hole of the bead is at the top. Allow to dry. Turn the bead and egg wells over and apply a generous amount of glue into the well. Overlap one end of the mini popsticks as shown and place into the glue. Apply more glue if needed and hold the popsticks in place until the glue starts to dry. Allow to dry completely.
Step 6Cut one piece of rainbow florist wire in half. Bend both ends of one half towards the centre to create two loops. Make one loop slightly bigger than the other to make wing shapes. Twist the ends of the wire together then twist around the middle of the loop to secure. Repeat for the other wire half. Bend and position the wings so they look similar.
Step 7Glue the wings to the back of your fairy’s body. Allow to dry.
Step 8Use the scrap pieces you set aside in steps 2 and 4 to create strands of hair and glue to the top of your wooden bead. Allow to dry. Paint the hair with your choice of colour and allow to dry. Paint eyes and a mouth to your fairy’s face. You can also add details like freckles and rosy cheeks. Allow to dry. Repeat steps 3-8 to create more fairies if you wish.
Step 9Paint the clay base light green and allow to dry. Use a brush and dark green paint to add texture to the base. Allow to dry.
Step 10Use the glue gun to attach the inside of the mushroom tops to the matchsticks in the clay base. You can tape two matchsticks together to give some of your mushrooms more height.
Step 11Glue your fairies to the base to place them in your garden scene. Your Egg Carton Fairy Garden is now ready to display!
