Step 1Print and use the template provided to cut out one hexagon from yellow cardboard. Adult supervision is recommended when using scissors.
Step 2Take a paper straw and cut it into approximately seven pieces. You don’t need to measure these exactly, as the differing sizes of the straw pieces will make for a more interesting ‘honeycomb’. Repeat this with lots of paper straws until you have a bowl full, ready for the next step.
We used approximately 30 straws, but you may need more or less depending on how tightly you glue the straws.
Step 3Add some tacky glue to a section of the cardboard hexagon and begin to glue the straw pieces in place. Arrange them so they are right next to each other and standing straight up. Continue adding glue and filling the hexagon until it is completely covered. Allow to dry.
Step 4Cut a 2.5cm wide strip from the long length of a sheet of yellow cardboard. Cut another 2.5cm wide strip but this time shorter, approximately 4.5cm long. Wrap the longer strip around the outside of the straws, creasing the cardboard at the corners of the hexagon. Wrap it as far around the edge as you can. Once it has been creased and fits to the hexagon, take it off, add glue to the inside of the strip and then wrap it back around in place. Glue the shorter strip to join the loose ends of the longer strip and then allow to dry. Your honeycomb is now ready for a bee!
Step 5Take a pom pom and wrap a chenille stem around it close to one end, twisting the chenille stem together at the bottom and trimming the excess. Repeat on the other end of the pom pom to create the bee’s stripes. Cut two short pieces of chenille stem and twist them onto the top part of one of the stripes to create the antennae. Use tacky glue to attach two wiggle eyes under the antennae. Cut a small set of wings from white cardboard and glue them onto the middle of the bee’s back. Allow to dry.
You may wish to make more than one bee. You could even use different contrasting colours to make bright and colourful bees!
Step 6Cut a 10cm length of chenille stem and bend in half to create a loop. Twist the loose ends together firmly and add to the top of your honeycomb, taping it in place at the back.
Step 7Add your bee (or bees) to the front of the honeycomb. Once you have them positioned, use tacky glue to secure. Allow to dry.
Step 8Finish your design by cutting some different lengths of yellow chenille stem. Bend them to look like dripping honey, ensuring you leave a short length at both ends. Bend the ends at a 90-degree angle so you can slide them into the straws of the honeycomb to hold in place.
Step 9Your Honey Bee Hanger is now ready to display!
