Step 1Choose a wooden heart design and use paint markers to decorate. You could use complimentary or contrasting colours, warm or cool colours, or a mix of your loved one’s favourite colours! Allow to dry.
Step 2Pick two colours of chenille stems that match your decorated heart. Take one of each colour and twist them together. Repeat so you have two twisted chenille stems.
Step 3Take a third colour of chenille stem and attach it by twisting onto one end of the twisted chenille stem. Wrap it down the length of the twisted chenille stem, creating small loops as you go. Continue all the way down the twisted chenille stem. You will need to add a new chenille stem when the first runs out – simply twist the ends together to join. Once you reach the end of the twisted chenille stem, wrap around to secure and trim any excess chenille stem. Adult supervision is recommended when using scissors. Repeat on the second twisted chenille stem.
Step 4Use a glue gun to attach the chenille stems to the outside edge of your wooden heart. Adult supervision is recommended when using a glue gun. Trim any excess chenille stem and allow to dry.
Step 5Now to create a tassel. Cut 2m of two different coloured embroidery threads. Wrap these around the four fingers on your hand then lay the bundle vertically in front of you on a flat surface. Cut 20cm of the same two colours of thread and lay them horizontally over the middle of the bundle. Pull the top bundle ends down over the horizontal threads and pinch at the fold. Cut 10cm of the same two colours of thread and wrap around the bundle just below the fold, tying the ends to hold in place and cutting any excess. Trim the looped ends at the bottom of the bundle to finish the tassel.
Step 6Hang your tassel from the bottom of the wooden heart through the chenille stem border. You can hang your tassel as low or as high as you wish - trim any excess as needed.
Step 7Take two 30cm pieces of the same two colours of thread and create a hanger by threading them through the hole in the top of the heart and tying the ends.
Step 8Your Hanging Wooden Heart is now complete and ready to gift!
You may wish to add a message to the back of your heart. Simply use a permanent pen or marker to write your message directly onto the wood.
