Harmony Day Friendship Bracelets

Celebrate friendship and respect for others this Harmony day through wearable art. These handmade friendship bracelets are the perfect way to promote a sense of belonging for everyone.

  • Step 1Natural Bracelet Cut 3 pieces, measuring approximately 40cm, of each of the imitation leather, jute twine and baker’s twine
  • Step 2Hold them all in your hand and tie a simple knot at the top, making sure to leave approximately 5cm of twine at the top. There will now be 9 strands (3 of each type of twine) hanging below the knot as shown in our demonstration.
  • Step 3Begin to plait the twine hanging below the knot, keeping the specific twines together and making sure they lay flat as you go.
  • Step 4Once you’ve reached about halfway, thread your chosen wooden bead onto the middle thread.
  • Step 5To secure the bead in place you will need to loop the left hand twine in front of the middle while the right hand twine will loop behind. The left and right will then loop around each other and you will pull them to fasten. This is a box knot. Look to our demonstration for how to achieve this.
  • Step 6Continue to plait the rest of your remaining twine and tie a knot at the bottom, making sure to leave enough twine for fastening to your wrist.
  • Step 7Bright Bracelet Works on the same knotting principals as the Natural Bracelet - just adds a little bling!
  • Step 8Choose 3 colours of the bright craft string and tie a simple knot at the top, making sure to leave approximately 5 cm of string at the top.
  • Step 9Use a simple plait to create approximately 3cm of plait then tie another knot.
  • Step 10Thread one of the metallic star beads (or a bead of your choice) onto the middle string and secure using a box knot as shown in the Natural Bracelet demonstration.
  • Step 11Thread a flat round wooden bead onto the middle string and secure using 2 box knots.
  • Step 12Thread a second and then a third flat round wooden bead onto the middle string, securing each in place with 2 box knots as you go.
  • Step 13Thread another metallic star bead (or a bead of your choice) onto the middle string and secure using a simple knot.
  • Step 14Use a simple plait to create approximately 3cm of plait then tie another knot.
  • Step 15Trim your 3 strings leaving approximately 5cm of string.
  • Step 16Use a black fine liner to draw the letters BFF on the flat wooden beads.
  • Step 17You have 2 beautiful Friendship Bracelets! You can now create as many bracelets as you like and celebrate Harmony Day by giving these bracelets to new and old friends!
