Indigenous Australian Cotton Bag Design

Celebrate Indigenous and Aboriginal culture by creating your own Australian Cotton Tote Bag! This idea has been created by Michelle Napanangka Earl, Artist & Basket Weaver. As a proud Darkinjung woman with Wonnarua ties, Michelle has a personal connection to the Hunter Valley and respectfully teaches and celebrates the Traditional Aboriginal Culture of the Communities that reside across the valley.

  • Step 1Research Aboriginal artists and artworks and gain an understanding of different styles that appeal to you. Take notice of the colours and patterns used in the artworks.
  • Step 2Draw a design onto a piece of paper using your research as inspiration. Using a light box, trace your design onto your bag. Alternatively, draw your design straight onto your bag.
  • Step 3Colour your bag design using fabric paint or fabric markers. Place a sheet of scrap paper inside the bag to ensure the paint does not seep through to the other side. Allow to dry.
  • Step 4Heat set your design following the instructions provided with your chosen fabric paint or marker product. Adult supervision is recommended.
  • Step 5Your Cotton Bag is now ready to use!
