Cake Gift Box

Step 1Paint the outside of your Paper Mache Gift Box with a solid colour to use as your base coat and allow to dry.
CleverTip: If you choose to use a lighter colour for your cake base, you may wish to prime your gift box with a layer of white paint first. Allow to dry between coats.
Step 2Use paint to decorate your cake! We’ve used a sponge to paint white on the bottom edge of the lid and red on the top edge of the box to look like a layer of cream and jam. You could try painting a drippy chocolate effect down the sides or rainbow sprinkles!
Step 3To make 3D icing, cut two 1cm strips of foam. Adult supervision is recommended when using scissors. Use a glue gun to secure one short end from each strip on top of each other. Adult supervision is recommended when using a glue gun. Allow the glue to dry.
Step 4Tape the glued end to a table to hold your foam strips in place. Use two hands to hold each foam strip flat beside the other. Twist the right strip over the left, and the left strip under to the right. Repeat this step until you reach the end of your foam. Use the glue gun to secure the ends together. Allow to dry.
CleverTip: Repeat this step with different colours of foam or smaller 5mm wide strips for different icing effects!
Step 5Use the glue gun to secure your foam twists to the bottom edge of the gift box or around the edge of the lid. Allow to dry. Trim any excess foam.
Step 6To make a strawberry cake topper, start by rolling red clay into a slightly pointed 2x3cm oval and make small divots with the end of a paintbrush. Use green clay to sculpt a flat, 8-pronged star for the leaves that measures approximately 2cm in diameter. Press the leaves onto the large end of your strawberry and curl the ends of the leaves upwards.
CleverTip: Your cake doesn't need to have a strawberry! You could also try making a candle, cherry or short message out of clay
Step 7Bake your clay according to the instructions and allow it to cool completely. Adult supervision is recommended when using an oven.
Step 8Paint small black dots using the end of a thin paint brush in the divots of your strawberry to look like seeds. Allow to dry.
Step 9Add a layer of gloss finish to your strawberry and allow it to dry completely.
Step 10Use the glue gun to secure the clay topper onto the lid of your gift box and allow to dry.
Step 11Your Cake Gift Box is now ready to treat someone special with a sweet gift!
