Talking Jack-O'-Lantern

Chitter chatter all day long with a fun origami Talking Jack-O’-Lantern! Download our free template and follow our step-by-step tutorial to fold your own for hours of fun with your friends.
  • Step 1Download and print out the template onto cover paper. This will make for sturdier construction. Decorate the template using coloured pencils or markers. Use scissors to carefully cut out around the two template pieces. Adult supervision is recommended when using scissors.
  • Step 2Place the square design side down, making sure the jack-o’-lantern’s face is along the bottom edge. Fold the bottom edge up to the top, crease then unfold. Fold the bottom and top edges into the middle line you just created, crease then unfold. There will now be three horizontal creases.
  • Step 3Turn the paper 90 degrees so the creases now run vertically and the face is on your left. Fold the bottom edge up to the top, crease then unfold. Fold the bottom and top edges into the middle line and crease, leaving them folded in.
  • Step 4Turn the paper 90 degrees so it is now running vertically. Fold the bottom edge up to the first horizontal fold line from the bottom and crease. Fold the top edge down to the first horizontal fold line from the top and crease. Fold the left and right edges into the middle line and crease.
  • Step 5Turn the paper 90 degrees so it is now running horizontally with the face on the left. Fold the bottom right corner upwards and crease so the bottom edge runs vertically along the middle line, as shown. Unfold then fold the top right corner downwards, creasing so the top edge runs vertically down the middle line as shown. Unfold.
  • Step 6Repeat the process from step 5 with the bottom left and top left corners and edges, as shown.
  • Step 7Turn the paper 90 degrees so it is now running vertically with the face at the top. Open the bottom left and right flaps, pushing the bottom edge upwards and creasing to create an upside-down trapezium shape, as shown.
  • Step 8Open the top left and right flaps, pushing the top edge downwards and creasing to create a trapezium shape as shown.
  • Step 9Flip the paper over. Now we want to re-crease along the 4 diagonal lines as shown by the blue dotted lines. Mountain fold along these existing creases so they are nice and sharp.
  • Step 10Pinch the paper gently between your thumb and forefinger, positioning your fingers on either side of the paper, as shown.
  • Step 11As you pinch and release your fingers the jack-o’-lantern’s mouth will open and close!
  • Step 12Mountain fold along the dotted line on the stalk template piece and glue in place on top of the jack-o’-lantern’s head. Allow to dry.
  • Step 13Your Talking Jack-O’-Lantern is now ready to chat with you and your friends!
