Origami Strawberries with Wooden Basket

This activity is berry good for practicing your origami! Create lots of lovely Origami Strawberries then decorate a nice picnic basket to hold them!
This easy craft is perfect to create in conjunction with the wonderful book ‘Grace and Mr Milligan’ by Caz Goodwin, illustrated by Pip Kruger and published by Marshall Cavendish International.
  • Step 1Take a red paper square and cover one side with small black strokes. These will be the seeds of the strawberry.
  • Step 2Take a green paper square and lay the red square on top of it with the ‘seed’ side facing upwards. We’re going to be working with the two sheets of paper together like this, so make sure the edges are all lined up nicely.
  • Step 3Flip the squares over so the green side is facing up, making sure to keep them aligned the whole time we are working.
  • Step 4Valley fold the bottom edge up to the top and crease, then open the fold back up. Valley fold the right side over to the left and crease, then unfold.
  • Step 5Flip the square back over so the red side is facing up. Valley fold the top right corner down to meet the bottom left. Crease then unfold. Valley fold the top left corner down to the bottom right. Crease then unfold.
  • Step 6Pick up the paper and guide it into a diamond shape, letting the paper fold naturally along the lines you have already created. The diagonal lines should valley fold inwards and the others mountain fold outwards. Pinch together then fold flat into a diamond as shown, with the open end at the bottom.
  • Step 7Bring the flap on the right upwards so it is perpendicular to the diamond. Push your index finger into the opening then squash fold it downwards to create an upside-down kite shape.
  • Step 8Flip the diamond over and repeat step 7 on the opposite side.
  • Step 9Fold the right flap of the kite over onto the left. Squash fold the large flap on the right that has been revealed.
  • Step 10Flip the shape over and repeat step 9 so you now have a small upside-down kite shape.
  • Step 11Fold the right flap of the kite over so there is now only red paper visible. Fold the left edge into the centre line as shown, followed by the right edge.
  • Step 12Flip the shape over and repeat step 11.
  • Step 13Fold two flaps on the right-hand side over to reveal another only red upside-down kite shape. Fold the left edge into the centre line as shown, followed by the right edge.
  • Step 14Flip the shape over. Fold two flaps on the right-hand side over to reveal another only red upside-down kite shape. Fold the left edge into the centre line as shown, followed by the right edge. You will now have a skinny diamond shape as shown.
  • Step 15Spin the shape 180 degrees so the green point is at the top. Fold the top point downwards as shown.
  • Step 16Flip the shape over and fold the top point downwards.
  • Step 17Fold two flaps on the right-hand side over to the left to reveal another green point at the top. Fold the top point downwards.
  • Step 18Flip the shape over and repeat step 17 on the opposite side.
  • Step 19Fold one flap on the right-hand side over so the paper is only red. Fold the top left and right corners into the centre line.
  • Step 20Flip the shape over and repeat step 19 on the opposite side.
  • Step 21Fold two flaps on the right-hand side over so the paper is only red again. Fold the top left and right corners into the centre line.
  • Step 22Flip the shape over and repeat step 21 on the opposite side to fold in the final corners.
  • Step 23Pick up the paper and hold in your fingers as shown, pushing the green points upwards. You should see a small opening at the top.
  • Step 24Blow firmly into the opening to inflate your strawberry! Repeat the above steps to create as many strawberries as you wish. We’ve made 9 to fill our wooden basket.
  • Step 25Assemble a wooden basket using glue, then allow to dry. Decorate your basket however you wish. We’ve painted with a solid colour, then cut out strawberry and flower shapes from matt paper squares and glued them in place before adding details with a permanent pen. Adult supervision is recommended when using scissors.
  • Step 26Add some tissue paper to your wooden basket and fill with your Origami Strawberries – perfect for a Book Week display!
