Step 1Take two sheets of red and two sheets of green A4 cover paper. Measure and cut 2cm wide strips along the long edge of each piece. Adult supervision is recommended when using scissors. Cover paper works best for this activity as it is sturdy but flexible for construction.
Step 2Take a strip and create a loop by bring the top end over, then twist, positioning so the end faces towards the right. Leave a small tail hanging over the length of the strip as shown. Ensure the top edge of the loop is 2cm wide once flattened. Move the tail up or down the length to change the size. You can check by slightly pressing down onto the loop to see where the fold will be, but don’t crease just yet!
Step 3Bring the bottom end up and through the paper loop, holding the small tail end tight. Pull the length all the way through. Push down on the paper to crease. You should have a small tail on the right and a long tail on the left. You will notice a pentagon forming in the centre.
CleverTip: You may find it easier in the following steps if you make folds that are gently folded, instead of sharp creases.
Step 4Fold the small tail end behind the pentagon. Fold the long tail end down behind the pentagon, towards the bottom-right edge. Fold the end around the front, towards the bottom-left edge.
Step 5Fold the tail end behind the pentagon then flip it over. Tuck the end of the paper under the folded section of the wrapped paper strip, like a pocket. Trim any excess paper from the end of the strip if it is sticking out from the pentagon.
Step 6Flip the pentagon back over. Push the sides in towards the centre using both your thumbs and index fingers. Pinch the paper to create the points of a star. Ensure all five edges are pushed and pinched to create a star shape.
CleverTip: You might find some edges are easier to push than others, so test the paper by slighting pushing an edge in then move around the shape, pushing in the edges until you are happy with the star shape.
Step 7Repeat steps 2-6 to create origami stars using the remaining strips of paper.
Step 8Use tacky glue to secure the stars to a papier mache cone, starting at the bottom and working your way towards the top. Allow to dry.
Step 9Add a star to the top of your tree. Attach two felt star stickers back-to-back, aligning the points of each star and sandwiching the tip of the cone in between.
Step 10Your Origami Star Tree is now ready to display!
