Origami Bird

Follow our video or step-by-step instructions below to fold your very own bird!

This activity is perfect for extending on the book ‘Bowerbird Blues’ by Aura Parker, but you could create any type of bird you like!
Written and illustrated by Aura Parker and published by Scholastic Australia, ‘Bowerbird Blues’ will be read as part of the ALIA National Simultaneous Storytime 2024 event!
  • Step 1Start by creating a square from an A4 sheet of cover paper. To do this, fold one of the corners on a diagonal so the corner is in line with the opposite side then trim the excess paper as shown. Adult supervision is recommended when using scissors. Unfold your square.
  • Step 2Fold the square on the opposite diagonal then unfold and rotate so it is positioned in a diamond shape.
  • Step 3Fold the bottom corner up to the middle crease then unfold.
  • Step 4Fold the square in half again along the middle diagonal crease with the points facing downwards. Fold back the top point to create a crease approximately 2.5cm above the fold line from step 3.
  • Step 5Mountain fold the paper along the vertical creased line. Position the paper as shown.
  • Step 6Bring the right-hand point across to the left and fold so the bottom right corner meets the crease. Unfold and then begin to open the paper up as shown. Valley fold along the straight crease then tuck the bottom of the triangle inside to create a reverse fold. Fold the shape flat.
  • Step 7We’re now going to turn the top left point into the head. Slide your left thumb into the pocket and begin to push the paper downwards from the top. Use your right hand to pinch the paper closed around it to create a reverse fold. A small point should be sticking out as shown.
  • Step 8Fold the top flap down to open the shape then fold the side points inwards. Fold the top flap back up into place as shown – this is the bird’s head and beak.
  • Step 9Now to make the tail. Take the point on the right, slide your right thumb into the pocket and begin to push the paper downwards from the top. Use your left hand to pinch the paper closed around it to create a reverse fold. This time you want a slightly bigger point sticking out compared to the head.
  • Step 10Fold the top flap of the bottom left point upwards and crease where it meets the edge as shown. Flip the paper over and repeat with the other downward facing point. These will be the wings.
  • Step 11Fold the top flap of the point along the bottom edge upwards to create a flat edge. Flip the paper over and repeat on the opposite side. Refold these two creases in the opposite direction and tuck them in so they are now inside the bottom edge. Crease firmly closed.
  • Step 12Fold the top wing backwards then forwards to create a concertina. Flip the paper over and repeat on the other side. You now have a bird!
  • Step 13Use a marker to draw an eye on either side of the bird and add in any other details you like. Your Origami Bird is now complete and will be able to sit on any flat surface!
