Step 1Decorate two paper cups, making sure to decorate both the inside and outside of one, the other can just be decorated on the outside. We have used paint and dot stickers on ours, however you can use whatever materials you like! Allow to dry if needed.
Step 2Cut down the seam of the cup that is decorated both inside and out. Adult supervision is recommended when using scissors. Cut all the way to the bottom of the cup then repeat on the opposite side. The cup now has two halves - make two more cuts in each half, spacing them evenly. Flatten the cup so the six segments you have made fan out around the bottom of the cup. Cut off two segments on opposite sides so there are only four remaining.
Step 3Fold each of the four segments in half, back towards the middle as shown. You have now created the claw!
Step 4Take a paper straw and cut approximately 2cm down the length from one end. Repeat this cut on the opposite side from the initial cut. Add two more of the same cuts, but this time perpendicular to the first cuts. Flatten out these cut straw segments as shown then tape in place on the top of the claw. Make sure the claw is facing downwards.
Step 5Take the other cup and use a sharp pencil to poke a hole in the middle of the bottom of the cup as shown. Thread the straw from the claw up through the hole from the inside of the cup. You’ll notice as the claw moves into the cup, the arms will squeeze inwards.
Step 6Your DIY Cup Claw Game is now ready to play! Push the straw in and out to manoeuvre the claw and use it to pick up pom poms. You could challenge yourself to time trials or get a group of friends together and each try to collect a certain colour of pom pom!
