Diwali Mehndi

Create your own special Mehndi designs to decorate cardboard hands & wrists for Diwali! Mehndi or Henna is traditionally applied to women’s hands and feet as a sign of femininity and beauty and signifies good luck and prosperity. It’s these characteristics that make them perfect to include in your Diwali celebrations!
  • Step 1Use poster paint sticks to create a nice gradient on a cardboard hand & wrist shape. Poster paint sticks are great for blending, so you can create a really nice gradient by blending your colours with your fingers. We’ve chosen purple, pink and yellow to create a sunrise look as Diwali is also known as ‘The Festival of Lights’. Allow to dry.
  • Step 2Use a permanent pen to start designing your Mehndi pattern over the top of your gradient. You may want to research different designs before you get started for inspiration. We have chosen to decorate the hand section only, leaving the wrist and arm for the next step.
  • Step 3Decorate the wrist/arm part of the cardboard with the word ‘DIWALI’. You may even wish to add the year into your design.
  • Step 4Your Diwali Mehndi is now complete and ready to place on display. If working in a class or group, you could display them all together to make a beautiful mural artwork!
