We have used glue dots in some steps of this activity to save on drying time and for aesthetic value. You could also use masking tape or PVA glue if that’s all you have on hand!
Step 1Choose a colour of cover paper and use it to cover a cardboard roll. Use a glue stick to glue in place and allow to dry. Adult supervision is recommended when using scissors.
Step 2Cut one 2.5 x 10cm strip of the same colour of cover paper. Glue one end inside the cardboard roll. Add glue to the opposite end of the strip, loop it over and attach it to the opposite inside wall of the cardboard roll as shown. This will be the body of the aeroplane.
Step 3Cut two 3 x 9cm strips of a contrasting colour of cover paper. Glue one of the strips around two giant popsticks laying side by side, so they are held together nice and tightly. Repeat with a second pair of giant popsticks so you now have two lots as shown. Allow to dry. These will be the aeroplane wings.
Step 4Take one of the wings and add glue dots to the middle. Press the aeroplane body in place on top of the glue dots as shown.
Step 5Cut two 5.5cm lengths of paper straw. Slide open scissors into the end of a straw piece and make 3 evenly spaced small cuts around the edge. Fan out the straw end and repeat on the opposite end. Repeat this process with the second piece of straw. Use glue dots to fix the straw pieces in place at the ends of the bottom wing as shown. Add a glue dot to the top of each of the straw pieces as well.
Step 6Add glue dots to the middle of the second set of wings and fix in place on top of the aeroplane body and straw pieces, aligned with the bottom set of wings.
Step 7Carefully cut a giant popstick in half and use scissors to round off the corners of one of the halves as shown.
Step 8Use a glue dot to fix the popstick piece in place on the paper strip at the front of the aeroplane. This will be the propeller.
Step 9Make a small cut along the top edge at the back of the aeroplane. Slide the remaining half popstick from step 7 into this cut, angling it backwards as shown. The cut should hold it in place, however you can use glue dots to secure if needed.
Step 10Cut a 3.5cm square of your contrasting-coloured cover paper. Cut the square in half on the diagonal so you have 2 tringles. Glue these in place on either side of the popstick piece at the end of the aeroplane. Allow to dry. This will be the tail.
Step 11Your Crafty Aeroplane is now complete! You may wish to make several of these in different colours to create a display or hang them in the window of your bedroom.
