CleverPatch Crafternoons: Origami Jack-O-Lantern

Learn how to create an Origami Jack-O-Lantern that can be used to decorate all sorts of spook-tacular crafts this Halloween!
  • Watch our Origami Basic Folds video to familiarise yourself with different folds before beginning.
  • Step 1Take an A4 sheet of cover paper in your chosen colour and make a square. Do this by folding the top left corner down and aligning the left edge to the side of the paper. Cut along the straight bottom edge of the triangle so you now have two pieces. Adult supervision is recommended when using scissors. Unfold the triangle to reveal the square. Place the rectangle piece to the side for use in other craft projects or for creating smaller origami jack-o-lanterns!
  • Step 2Your square will have one diagonal valley fold already. Valley fold the square on the opposite diagonal then unfold.
  • Step 3Flip the square over and valley fold the bottom edge up to the top and crease, then open the fold back up. Valley fold the right side over to the left and crease, then unfold.
  • Step 4Flip the square over again and pick up the paper, folding along the crease lines you have created. The diagonal lines should valley fold inwards and the others mountain fold outwards. Pinch together in the centre then fold flat into a diamond as shown, making sure there are two flaps on each side and the open end is at the bottom.
  • Step 5Bring one flap on the right upwards so it is perpendicular to the diamond. Push your index finger into the opening then squash fold it downwards to create an upside-down kite shape.
  • Step 6Flip the diamond over and repeat step 5 on the opposite side.
  • Step 7Fold the top layer of the two bottom points upwards then tuck into the pocket of the kite shape as shown.
  • Step 8Flip the paper over and repeat step 7, folding the remaining bottom points upwards and tucking into the pocket.
  • Step 9Fold the right-hand point inwards so it is slightly overlapping the edge of the inner triangle. Tuck it under the edge so it is now held in place. Repeat on the left-hand side.
  • Step 10Fold the right-hand point inwards, aligning the top edge to the inside triangle edge as shown. Repeat on the left-hand side.
  • Step 11Fold the bottom right corner up, creating a straight edge as shown. Unfold and create an inside reverse fold by pushing the point inside and closing the paper around it.
  • Step 12Repeat step 11 on the bottom left corner.
  • Step 13Fold the top point downwards, creasing so the point is 1-1.5cm from the bottom. Fold the point back upwards, creasing 1-1.5cm from the top as shown.
  • Step 14Flip the paper over to reveal your pumpkin shape! Use a black marker to create your jack-o-lantern face and stem.
  • Step 15Your Origami Jack-O-Lantern is now complete! You can use the excess strip of paper from step 1 to create some smaller ones as well.
  • These Origami Jack-O-Lanterns are perfect for decorating at Halloween. String a bunch together to create bunting or stick onto trick-or-treat lolly bags to give to your friends!
