CleverPatch Crafternoons: Easy Paper Flowers

Spring has sprung and what better way to celebrate the turn of the season than with some beautiful blooms?! The best thing about these flowers is that they are perfect all year round - so you can keep those Spring vibes forever! We will show you how to make a stem, followed by 2 simple flower designs.
  • You may wish to use sticky tape rather than glue to cut out any drying time and to make construction of your stems and flowers a little bit easier.
  • Step 1How to make a stem: Take a full sheet of green paper and start rolling diagonally from the corner. When you have a small triangle of paper left, add some glue and then continue to roll it up to form a long skinny tube – this is your basic stem! Allow to dry.
  • Step 2How to make flower 1: Take a sheet of coloured A4 paper and cut in half lengthwise. Adult supervision is recommended when using scissors. Take one of these pieces and carefully cut a fringe down the long edge. Make sure your cuts are around 15mm wide and only cut about three quarters of the way through the paper.
  • Step 3Tightly roll each of the fringed sections downwards until all of them have been curled as shown.
  • Step 4Glue the bottom corner of the fringed paper to the top of a stem on a slight angle as shown, making sure the curls are facing outwards. Begin to wrap the paper around the stem, slowly and carefully pulling it slightly downwards as you go so it is wrapping down the stem. Secure the end with glue and allow to dry.
  • Step 5Take a green sheet of paper and concertina fold along the short edge 3 times before cutting away the rest of the paper. Hold the paper on the double folded edge and carefully cut half a leaf shape on the opposite side. Make sure to cut the edge with a single fold away and when you open the folds you will now have 2 leaves!
  • Step 6Use glue to attach the leaves to the stem below the curled flower, gently bending the tips of the leaves away from the flower. Allow to dry and your first flower is complete!
  • Step 7How to make flower 2: Take a sheet of coloured A4 paper and fold it in half lengthwise. Cut a fringe all the way down the folded edge and about three quarters through the paper. The fringing should be nice and close together, around 5mm apart.
  • you can cut the paper in half lengthways before starting Step 7 to create a smaller flower.
  • Step 8Open the paper out and lay it on the desk so the mountain fold is sitting up. Apply glue down one long edge of the paper, then fold the other long edge over and stick it down in place as shown. Allow to dry.
  • Step 9Glue the bottom corner of the fringed paper to the top of a stem on a slight angle. Begin to wrap the paper around the stem, slowly and carefully pulling it slightly downwards as you go so it is wrapping down the stem. Secure the end with glue and allow to dry.
  • Step 10Cut a 9 x 9cm square of green paper and then create a zigzag edge all the way around. You can do this quickly by folding the square into a triangle 3 times and cutting a zigzag on one of the open ends before unfolding. Make a cut from the edge to the centre point and then use your fingers to gently bend the paper backwards. Add glue along one of the straight cut edges. Place onto the stem below the flower and wrap the paper around the stem. Use glue to secure.
  • Step 11Allow to dry and your second basic flower is now complete!
  • Step 12If you want to create a bunch of flowers, you may want to add some foliage stems as well! To make these, simply cut out some leaf shapes and glue them onto a plain stem, carefully bending them backwards as needed. Allow to dry.
  • Step 13Now you have the skills, you can create as many individual or bunches of flowers as you like. Use them to brighten up any room or gift them to a friend for Spring!
