Step 1Protect your surface with scrap paper or a splash mat. Put on some gloves and wet your cotton bag. Squeeze out any excess water and then apply black fabric tie dye. Massage in to the bag making sure it is fully covered.
The thicker the coverage, the stronger the black will be and the more effective the silhouette will come out.
Step 2Place the wet, dyed bag into a zip lock bag and refrigerate for 4 hours to set the dye.
Step 3Remove the bag from the zip lock bag after 4 hours and allow to air dry completely. Wash under cold water to remove any excess dye, then allow to completely dry again. You may wish to tumble dry to heat set the dye, or simply air dry and heat set using an iron.
Step 4Print and cut out the bear template. Adult supervision is recommended when using scissors. Laminate the bear for a sturdier template that can be wiped down and re-used in the future.
Step 5Place the template on top of the bag, making sure it is centred. You may wish to Blu-Tack it down if you’re worried about it moving.
Step 6Take a paper cup and mix up your first fluoro colour. We are mixing the Fluorescent Paint and PVA glue with a ratio of 1:1. This will give the paint a slightly dimensional look when dry. Mix each of your chosen colours in this way.
Step 7Pour each colour into their own small zip lock bag. These will be used like piping bags to apply the paint over the template onto the bag.
Step 8Take the first colour and snip a tiny piece off the corner of the zip lock bag. You don’t want a large opening as the paint will come out too thick and take too long to dry.
Step 9Using the zip lock bag like a piping bag, squeeze the paint out and criss cross over the template.
Step 10Continue to do this with each of the colours you have mixed until the template and bag are nice and covered.
Step 11Carefully slide a finger in under the template and begin to lift it off the bag. Be careful not to smudge the wet paint as you lift. You may need to carefully hold the bag as you pull the template away if you have used Blu-Tack.
Step 12Allow your bag to dry completely then it is ready to be used! Depending on the thickness of the paint, this could take 24 hours or more.
