Step 1Fold a sheet of watercolour paper in half then cut out a heart shape so you have two hearts the same size. You may prefer to lightly sketch the heart shape before you start cutting. Adult supervision is recommended when using scissors.
Step 2Use an oil pastel to decorate each of the hearts. We have used an orange oil pastel to write Harmony on one heart and draw a pattern on the other.
Step 3Put down splash mats or scrap paper to protect your work surface. Paint liquid watercolour onto the hearts. To make your designs pop, consider choosing contrasting oil pastel and liquid watercolour colours. You can see the oil pastels resisting the watercolour to reveal your designs. Allow to dry.
Step 4Take two chenille stems and twist each of the ends to create small loops. Place one of your hearts with the design facing down. Lay one chenille stem across the middle of the heart horizontally to create arms. Bend the other chenille stem in half and position towards the bottom of the heart to create legs. Use sticky tape to hold both chenille stems in place.
Step 5With your first heart still laying design facing down, glue your other heart on top with the design facing out. Your chenille stems should now be in between the two hearts. Allow to dry.
Step 6Use a permanent marker to draw a face or other details onto your hearts if you would like. We have also used it to outline any words so they stand out.
Step 7Use a hole punch to create a hole in the top of your assembled heart. Cut a length of jute twine, thread it through the hole and tie it to create a hanger.
Step 8Your Harmony Heart Buddy is now ready to display!
