Nature Bracelets

Created by Michelle Earl, this activity allows children to explore their natural environment just like Michelle loves to do when she goes bush.

Michelle is a proud Darkinjung woman with Wonnarua ties. She has a personal connection to The Hunter Valley and respectfully teaches and celebrates the traditional Aboriginal culture of the communities that reside across the valley.

  • Step 1Explore your local bush and collect a range of natural materials including fallen leaves, flowers, bark, twigs, or feathers. Always ensure you have permission before collecting anything from the local environment and adult supervision is recommended.
  • Step 2Cut a 15cm length of packaging tape. Adult supervision is recommended when using scissors. Place it on a flat surface (sticky side up) with a pencil on each end to hold it in place.
  • Step 3From your collection, place the natural materials onto the tape to create an eye-catching design. Try to keep the materials to a single layer and avoid hanging them over the edge of the tape. Carefully remove the pencils from the tape.
  • Step 4Cut a second 15cm length of tape. Carefully place the tape (sticky side down) over the first piece of tape. Press the two pieces of tape together, securing your natural materials in between.
  • Step 5Trim the bracelet down to your required size. We made ours approximately 10cm long. Add another shorter piece of tape over each end of the bracelet to add extra strength before beginning the next step.
  • Step 6Use a hole punch to create a hole in each end of the bracelet, approximately 1.5cm in from the edge.
  • Step 7Cut six strands of wool, each measuring 20cm long. You can choose whichever colours you like. Thread three of the strands through one hole and tie a double knot to secure them in place. Repeat with the remaining three strands at the other end.
  • Step 8Your Nature Bracelet is now ready to wear! Place the bracelet over your wrist and tie the wool strands together to secure.
