Step 1Blow up a balloon to about 10cm in diameter. Tie a knot in the balloon to secure.
Step 2Cut strips of mod-rock and set them aside in a craft bowl. Adult supervision is recommended when using scissors. Place a strip of mod-rock into a bowl of warm water. Squeeze the excess water from the strip and place it over the balloon. Smooth the strip with your finger. Continue layering mod-rock strips over the balloon’s surface until it is covered, leaving only the tied end of the balloon exposed. Layer scrunched pieces of mod-rock onto one side of the balloon to create a domed section for the top of your submarine. You can be as creative as you like with this shape. Use more strips to blend the dome to the rest of the mod-rock surface. You will need at least 3-4 layers all over to ensure the mod-rock is sturdy once dry. Leave the tied balloon end exposed and set aside to dry completely.
CleverTip: We recommend using a craft tray or laying down some scrap paper when working with mod-rock to help keep your work area tidy!
Step 3Make a slit near the knot of the balloon to release the air. Carefully remove the balloon from the centre of the mod-rock shape.
Step 4Place a wooden wheel onto an axle so it sits 4cm from one end. Place a wooden spool onto the short end. Glue three mini popsticks to the end of the spool as shown using a glue gun, ensuring the glue doesn’t touch the axle. Adult supervision is recommended when using a glue gun. Allow to dry. Place a wooden bead onto the end of the axle so it just sits above the popsticks and the spool can spin freely. Apply glue to the end of the axle and the bead to secure in place and allow to dry.
Step 5Place the long end of the axle into the opening of the mod-rock shape. Glue the wheel to the mod-rock to secure in place and allow to dry.
Step 6Cut a mini popstick in half. Glue the cut ends together at a 90 degree angle. This will become the submarine’s telescope. Glue the popstick to the top of the dome. Use generous amounts of glue to secure in place. You may need to hold it in place for a minute or so for the glue to start to dry then allow it to dry completely.
Step 7Decorate your submarine using paint. You might like to sketch a design onto the mod-rock before painting. You can use our image as inspiration or create your own design! Allow to dry.
Step 8Cut two 1m lengths of craft line. Tape the centre of one length to the bottom and sides, towards the front of the submarine. Tie the ends together in a knot at the ends of the line above the submarine. Tape the other length to the bottom and sides, towards the back of the submarine. Tie the ends together in a knot. Hold up your submarine using the lines to check the lengths on each side hang evenly. You may need to adjust the position of the tape and/or lines.
Step 9Paint over the tape to blend it into the submarine design. Allow to dry.
Step 10Place the two craft line loops onto a wooden scratch board tool so each loop sits on opposite ends of the tool. You may wish to check the lengths again to ensure the submarine sits evenly, making any adjustments as needed. Wrap the tail ends of line around the wood and secure using a small amount of masking tape. This will become a handle and hanger. Peg the wooden handle to a length of string or line to hang in the classroom, or simply hold your submarine by the handle.
Step 11Your Mod-Rock Submarine is now ready to display! Tap the popsticks to watch the propellers spin.
