May the 4th Robot

Create your very own robot to celebrate May the 4th!
  • Step 1Use a hobby knife to cut a 5cm decofoam ball in half. Adult supervision is recommended when using a hobby knife. Trim the rough edges so the flat part sits evenly on the 7cm ball.
  • CleverTip: You can use the steps below as a decorative guide, or why not use your imagination to create your own unique robot?!
  • Step 2Draw 6 circles onto the 7cm ball using a black pen or pencil, making sure you leave a small space between each circle. Start with a circle on one side, then draw a circle on the opposite side of the ball. Draw two more circles between the first two circles on the front and back of the ball. Draw the last two circles on the top and bottom of the ball.
  • Step 3Draw a line to connect each of the circles.
  • Step 4Draw four curved lines inside each circle as shown. Join the curves by drawing a ‘U’ shape between them. This will create the shape inside the circles.
  • Step 5Add further details like nuts and bolts around the circles. Add more shapes and lines to the inside of each circle.
  • Step 6Draw a small circle on top of the decofam ball half from Step 1. Draw a ring around the bottom edge.
  • Step 7Draw on your robot’s eye/s. We drew another small circle slightly below and to the right, then added a slightly larger circle around this. Add further details such as buttons, nuts and bolts.
  • Step 8Mix 2 parts gold, 1 part yellow and 1 part orange paint together to create a metallic orange. Paint all the circles on the body leaving the shape in the middle white. Allow to dry. Add a second thicker layer of paint to cover any lines you’ve drawn. Allow to dry.
  • Step 9Paint some of the shapes on the head with the paint mixture and allow to dry. Add a thicker second coat to cover any lines. Allow to dry.
  • Step 10Paint the top and bottom of the head using silver paint, as well as any shapes in the centre of the circles on your body. Allow to dry. Paint a second thicker coat to cover any lines. Allow to dry. Paint the eyes black and allow to dry.
  • Step 11Neaten the edges and paint over any smudges with white paint. Allow to dry. Apply a few coats if necessary. Allow to dry between coats.
  • Step 12Cut a 10cm piece of skewer. Insert the skewer into the top, centre of the head and through the centre of the body. Push it through so that 3cm of the skewer is sticking out at the top of the head. Paint the skewer silver and allow to dry.
  • Step 13Your Robot is now ready to display!
