Step 1Create a heart shape with a chenille stem. You may like to twist 2 chenille stems together like we have for a fun two-toned heart!
An easy way to create a heart shape is to first create a circle, twisting the ends together to hold and then shaping your heart from there.
Step 2Plug in your glue gun and allow it to start warming up. Lay some baking paper down on the desk and place the chenille stem heart on top. Try to get the heart as flat as you can on the desk. Begin to pump the melted glue into the chenille stem heart frame. Add in some flower rhinestones as you go. Adult supervision is recommended when using a glue gun. Even low melt glue can get extremely hot and burn the skin on contact!
Step 3Continue to fill the chenille stem frame with glue, adding the rhinestone decorations as well as a message or saying for your sweetheart using beads. We have spelt out ‘Love Bug’ but you could write anything you like - get creative!
Work as quickly as you can when filling the heart. Make sure you have your decorations on hand ready to go to ensure the glue is still hot when adding them to your design.
Step 4Once the main elements are in it’s time to add glitter! If your glue has hardened, you can add in some extra glue, making sure not to cover the rhinestones and beads. Cover the design in glitter and then place a piece of baking paper on top and use your hand to apply some gentle pressure to help the glitter stick. Remove the baking paper and allow the glue to harden. Gently peel your heart up off the baking paper below, tipping off the excess glitter. You can use the baking paper to tip this back into the glitter shaker for use later.
Step 5Take 3 chenille stems and cut them into approximately 5cm pieces, then bend them into small ‘U’ shapes as shown. Flip your heart over and use the glue gun to attach the pieces to the back, creating a border.
Step 6Cut another chenille stem in half. Fold in half and twist the ends together to make a loop. Use the glue gun to secure in place at the top of the heart to create a hanger. Place the tassel so it will hang from the bottom of the heart and fix in place with the glue gun.
Step 7Cut a heart shape from felt to cover the back of your design. This will give it a tidy and finished look. Glue in place with the glue gun.
Step 8Your bright, sparkly, tasseled Valentine’s decoration is now ready to give to your sweetheart!
