Bright Patterned Butterflies

Experiment with pattern and colour as you create these beautiful flying butterflies! 
This is a great activity to accompany the book ‘The Truck Cat’. Written by Deborah Frenkel, illustrated by Danny Snell and published by Hardie Grant Publishing, ‘The Truck Cat’ will be read as part of the ALIA National Simultaneous Storytime 2025 event!
  • Step 1Start by colouring the wings of the butterfly with a block colour. Allow to dry.
  • Step 2Choose a contrasting colour and add a pattern to your design. The paint markers will allow you to create bold designs over the top of your chosen base colour. Allow to dry.
  • Step 3Flip the butterfly over and colour the back in a reverse of the front designs. Allow to dry.
  • Step 4Flip the butterfly back over and add a touch of sparkle to your design using self-adhesive rhinestones.
  • Step 5While holding one end of the butterfly, wind the other end at least 25 times.
  • Step 6Hold the butterfly flat in your hand and when ready, release your butterfly to watch it fly!
