The 2022 Winter Paralympic Games begin on the 4th of March 2022! This year’s mascot is Shuey Rhon Rhon - a lantern character representing the inspiring Para athletes and their friendship, warmth, courage, and perseverance.

Celebrate the start of the Paralympics by creating Shuey Rhon Rhon using traditional Chinese paper cutting techniques.

Step 1Print out the template provided onto copy paper and cut along the solid black lines. We have printed ours onto green paper so you can see it better. Adult supervision is recommended when using scissors. Cut along the dotted lines as well.
Step 2Take a piece of origami paper and fold in half with the design inwards. Place on a flat surface so the folded edge is on the left-hand side. Lay your printed template on top of the folded origami paper, with the straight edge aligned to the folded left edge of the origami paper as shown.
Step 3Trace around the template shape so the outline is now transferred to the origami paper. Older children may wish to challenge themselves by copying the template freehand!
Step 4Cut around the pencil lines you have drawn on the origami paper. As your origami paper is folded in half, you’ll be cutting both sides of your character at once!
Step 5Unfold the paper to reveal a paper cut Shuey Rhon Rhon!
Step 6Add a touch of sparkle to your mascot using glitter glue then allow to dry. Your Paper Cut Mascot is now ready to display as you cheer on the Paralympic athletes!
