Step 1Take your wooden board and use a piece of masking tape to section off the handle section. Lay a second piece of tape on top of the first. Be sure to press the tape down firmly and wrap it around and under the board. We have chosen a diagonal line but you could go straight across or make an interesting line - get creative!
You may wish to also cover the back of the board with tape or paper to avoid any drips getting on this side.
Step 2In a jar or paper cup, pour in your chosen colours of paint one on top of the other. We used 4 colours - Parrot Fish Green, Lilly Pilly Pink, Native Violet Purple and Stirling Wax White. We have only used around 30ml of paint all up, but this quantity will change depending on how much you have sectioned off for painting. Take a giant popstick and gently stir the paint once or twice.
Step 3Cover your work surface with scrap paper or a splash mat. Holding the board on an angle with a craft bowl underneath to catch excess paint, pour the paint over the wood and let it run down the handle.
The craft bowl is not necessary but a nice way to catch excess paint for adding to gaps in your pour or using on a separate piece for less wastage.
Step 4Tip your board from side to side so the paint covers the whole handle. Don’t forget to let it go over the edges. You can use a giant popstick to scoop up excess paint and fix any edges that are missed.
Step 5 Leave the board to dry. Prop it up underneath so it sits flat and off your work surface. This way any excess paint can drip away.
Step 6Once the board has dried completely, remove the masking tape. You may find paint has bled under the tape, resulting in a jagged line.
Step 7Use a ruler and black POSCA marker to draw over the jagged paint line, creating a nice border line.
Step 8Now it’s time to seal the surface of the board. Grate, cut or shave small pieces of beeswax and spread over the surface of the wooden board. You will only need around 3 grams.
Step 9Lay a sheet of baking paper over the top of the wax and board, then carefully run a hot iron over the top until the wax melts. You will be able to see this happen. Once it is nicely melted all over, remove the baking paper and rub the surface with a rag to coat the board evenly.
If you get a section where the wax is too think and has dried yellow, simply re-apply the baking paper and iron over again to melt it down, then buff it out with the rag.
Step 10Once the wax has cooled and hardened, your beautiful wooden board is ready to gift!
