Step 1Download and print out your chosen template from those provided onto white cover paper. We recommend using cover paper as it provides a stronger surface for gluing. Alternatively, you can transfer the template design onto the canvas, or draw your own design.
Step 2If using a template, cut around your chosen template design. Adult supervision is recommended when using scissors. We have chosen to use the flower template design. Glue the template onto the canvas using tacky glue, ensuring the edges are aligned. Allow to dry. If you would like to transfer the design instead, shade the back of the template with a pencil, then place onto the canvas. Trace over the design and check to see if the design has transferred. You will need to use pressure when tracing. Remove the template and trace over the transfer lines to make them more visible.
Step 3Plan the colours of yarn you will use for each section. We are using brown for the flower centre, yellow for the petals, and pink and orange for the background sections.
Step 4Start from the bottom of the design and work your way up the canvas. Cut lengths of yarn slightly longer than the centre shape. Apply tacky glue using a brush over the centre section. Place a length of yarn over the glue, aligning the bottom edge. Continue adding lengths above the previous length until the section is completely filled in. Allow to dry. Trim the lengths of yarn so they are neat.
Step 5To create the petals, apply glue to the section then make a loop of yarn around the template line. Fill in each petal by creating a spiral with the yarn length. You may like to cut long lengths of yarn for easier handling. Trim any excess yarn as you go. You may need to cut some smaller lengths to fill in any gaps. Allow to dry.
Step 6Fill in the background sections however you like using your chosen colours of yarn. Secure with glue and allow to dry.
Step 7Trim any excess yarn from around the edges of the canvas. Your Mother’s Day Yarn Artwork is now ready to display!
