Step 1Create a ghost shape for the Mod-Rock using cardboard rolls and a balloon. Use one cardboard roll as the main stand. Cut a hole in each side of the roll close to the top by opening the scissors out and carefully pushing a blade in towards the centre of the roll. Adult supervision is recommended when using scissors. Cut another cardboard roll in half horizontally and then cut vertically along the roll on opposite sides to create 2 pieces. These will be used to make 2 ‘arms’. Roll each of the cardboard pieces into a tight scroll and insert into the holes you created on either side of the main cardboard roll stand. Slightly inflate a balloon and tie a knot. Tape in place on top of the stand.
Step 2Cover your workspace with a splash mat or scrap paper. Take 1 metre of Mod-Rock and cut up into manageable pieces. We have cut some larger pieces with jagged bottoms for the main body of the ghost, as well as some smaller pieces to add on and create stability.
Step 3Wet your pieces of Mod-Rock in a bowl of warm water. Squeeze out any excess water and then drape over the stand you created in step 1. The aim here is to let the plaster sheet hang loosely and fall over the stand to create the folds of the ghost. Add a couple of layers to the ghost until you are happy with the shape. You want the Mod-Rock to come down and flatten out onto the work surface, as this will allow the ghost to stand up on it’s own.
You don’t want to add too many layers as we want the light to be able to shine through the ghost!
Step 4Allow the Mod-Rock to dry slightly (we waited approximately 5 minutes but timing will depend on individual conditions). You want it to be dry enough to hold it’s own shape, but wet enough that the stand underneath can still be removed. Carefully hold the ghost at it’s head and gently pull the stand out from underneath.
Step 5Your ghost should now be able to stand on it’s own. You may wish to add a few extra pieces of Mod-Rock to the head or around the base to give it some strength. Allow the ghost to completely dry.
Step 6Once your ghost has hardened, carefully draw on the face using permanent marker.
Step 7Place the ghost over the top of an LED tealight and see it glow!
