We’re going to make our characters from simple box shapes. We will show you how to create a jack-o’-lantern character, but you could make whatever you like! Take inspiration from our other characters or come up with your own.
Step 1Cut a square from an orange sheet of cover paper. To do this easily, fold one of the corners on a diagonal then trim the excess paper as shown. Adult supervision is recommended when using scissors. Unfold your square.
Step 2Fold the square on the opposite diagonal then unfold.
Step 3Fold the square in half vertically to create a rectangle and open back out. Fold in half horizontally to create a rectangle and open back out. You will now have vertical and horizontal creases as well as the diagonals.
Step 4Fold the four corners into the centre point.
Step 5Fold one of the straight edges in, making a crease at a third of the square. Open it back out and turn the square so the crease is at the top. Bring the bottom edge up to the creased line and fold, then open back out. The square will now have two horizontal folds dividing it into thirds.
Step 6Repeat step 5 but from the opposite sides so you now have two vertical folds as well.
Step 7Open up the top and bottom folds as shown. You will now see a large square with a triangle at the top and bottom.
Step 8Use your pointer finger to push in the diagonal crease in the top right corner of the large square. Fold it down then repeat on the opposite corner. This will bring the sides of the square in and there will be a flap pointing upwards as shown.
Step 9Fold the pointy flap down and over the folded in sections to hold them in place.
Step 10Repeat steps 8-9 on the opposite, open end to bring the sides in and complete the box.
Step 11Take a second sheet of orange cover paper. This time we need to make a smaller box so use a ruler and pencil to draw up an 18cm square. Carefully cut the square out before folding on one of the diagonals and opening back up.
Step 12Repeat steps 2-10 to create a second, smaller box. Use the bigger box as a lid, sliding it on top of the smaller box.
Step 13Use a permanent marker to draw a jack-o’-lantern face on one side of the large box, making sure the base of the box is facing upwards. Use green cover paper to create a top and stalk of the pumpkin and glue in place. Allow to dry.
Step 14Fill the small box with Halloween treats and place your jack-o’-lantern lid back on top to hold the treats inside. Your Halloween Character Treat Box is now ready to gift to friends and family!
