Easter Egg Matching Game

Looking to slip some maths, pattern making and fine motor development into your Easter activities? This one has something for every-bunny! Have fun decorating your eggs and egg cups before turning them into a game that will be hours of fun! Younger children can focus on concepts such as colour, basic matching & pattern making, while older children can delve into the world of combinations and permutations!
This activity involves decorating and planning the game before playing. Depending on the age of the children you are working with, you may wish to involve them in all of these steps or only to participate in the game. You can turn the planning part into a fun maths lesson for older children while the finished product could be set out as a station for younger children to learn about colour and patterns.
  • We have chosen to create a game for a single child using five eggs and cups. You could create two sets like this and have children race their friend to see who can be the fastest or create a variety of other games based on the cards, eggs and cups – get creative!
  • Step 1Decorate the plastic eggs using permanent markers. Use interesting patterns or bright block colours, or even a combination of both!
  • Step 2Decorate the wooden egg cups using permanent markers. We have chosen to draw some cute characters on ours!
  • Step 3You can now create the playing cards from the templates provided. Download and print the templates onto cover paper. Swap the plastic egg halves around until you have a combination you like. Colour in each of the egg template cards on one sheet to display the different combinations you have made with your set of decorated eggs. When you finish one set of cards showing the different combinations, swap the egg halves around again so they are different and colour in another sheet of egg cards. Repeat until you have your desired number of egg card sheets.
  • We’ve based the template on using five eggs so you will need to print more template sheets if you are making a larger set.
  • Step 4Cut out around the outer edge of the egg cards. Adult supervision is recommended when using scissors. Make sure to keep the cards in their set – we will keep ours in each set of five.
  • You can write the same number or letter on the back of each card in each set so they don’t get mixed up!
  • Step 5Time to play! Split your eggs into halves and place in a bowl. Set out the egg cups then deal out one set of cards so there is an egg card in front of each egg cup. Start a timer and work as fast as you can to construct an egg from two halves, matching it to the cards. Once constructed, place it in the egg cup with the corresponding picture. Stop the timer once you have constructed all eggs and placed them in their corresponding egg cups. Play again and again using different sets of cards and try to beat your time or play against a friend and see who can finish the fastest!
