If you don’t have coloured paper on hand, you can complete this activity by using white paper and decorating using markers, pencils or paint. We recommend using cover paper for sturdier construction.
Step 1Print and cut out the templates provided. Adult supervision is recommended when using scissors. Keep these on hand ready to use in the following steps.
Step 2Choose two contrasting colours of cover paper. Fold each sheet in half (short edges together) and cut along the fold line. Place two halves to the side so you now have only two A5 sheets, one in each colour.
Step 3Fold one of the pieces of paper in half, short edges together. Lay the chicken template piece on top of the paper, aligning the long straight edge of the template with the folded edge of the paper and the bottom edges together. Trace the template piece then cut along the line so you now have two pieces as shown. Unfold the two pieces of paper then take the larger bottom piece and bring the short ends together. Glue in place and allow to dry. This is the chicken’s body.
Step 4Take the remaining top piece of paper from step 3 and refold in half. Place one of the wing templates on top of the paper, aligning the straight edge of the template with the open edge of the folded paper. Trace the template piece then cut along the line so you now have two wings.
Step 5Fold the wing pieces as indicated by the dotted line on the template to create a tab. Use the tabs to glue each wing in place on either side of the chicken’s body. Allow to dry.
Step 6Place the comb template on top of the contrasting coloured paper, aligning the straight edges. Trace the template piece then cut out. Glue the comb in place on top of the chicken’s head, making sure to glue it at the back. Allow to dry.
Step 7Place the beak template on top of the contrasting coloured paper, aligning the straight edges. Trace the template piece then cut out. Mountain fold the piece in half. Valley fold as indicated by the dotted lines on the beak template and use these small tabs created to glue onto the front of the chicken’s head as shown. Allow to dry.
Step 8Cut a piece of the contrasting coloured paper so it’s big enough when folded in half to lay one of the feet templates over. Trace around the template and cut out so you now have two chicken feet. Fold the feet pieces as indicated by the dotted line on the template to create tabs. Use these tabs to glue each foot in place at the bottom, inside of the chicken’s body. Allow to dry.
Step 9Glue wiggle eyes in place on either side of the beak to complete the chicken’s face. Allow to dry. Alternatively, you could use a marker to draw on some eyes.
Step 10Place an egg in the front of your chicken ready for gifting. You can create as many Chicken Easter Egg Holders as you like using different colour combinations!
