CleverPatch Crafternoons - NAIDOC Week – Woven Bag Tags with Aunty Michelle

Celebrate NAIDOC Week with our wonderful friend and artist – Aunty Michelle Earl! Follow along as she teaches us a weaving technique to create a wonderful bag tag in the colours of the Aboriginal flag.
  • Step 1Take a single strand of your first colour of raffia and tie onto a wooden ring using a double knot. Make sure the knot is on outside edge of the ring as shown. We are starting with red, but you can choose whichever colour you like.
  • Step 2Lay the shorter tail piece of the raffia down on top of the ring. Wrap the long end of raffia around your thumb then down through the middle of the ring. Bring the long end back up and behind the ring, threading it through the loop created by your thumb. Pull firmly to create a knot.
  • You want to pull firmly so the knot stays in place, but not too firm that you split or break the raffia. Make sure each new knot is beside the previous knot.
  • Step 3Continue to repeat step 2, weaving and knotting around the ring and the tail. Make sure the knots run along the outside edge of the ring in a straight line.
  • Step 4When you’re getting close to the end of the piece of raffia, weave a loose knot. Take a new, long length of raffia and tuck a short amount through the loose knot running down the wooden ring. Pull the loose knot tight to hold the new piece in place. Lay both short ends of raffia along the top of the ring and then continue to weave again with the new, long piece.
  • Step 5Once you have covered the entire ring, thread the tail end of the raffia onto a blunt sewing needle. Push the needle back underneath the woven raffia of the ring and then pull the needle through, tucking the end of the raffia underneath. Remove the needle and cut away any excess raffia. Adult supervision is recommended during this step. Your first ring is now complete!
  • Step 6Follow steps 1-5 to complete another two rings – one black and one yellow. You will now have a black, yellow and red ring.
  • Step 7Now we want to join the rings together. Take your red ring and lay it over the top of the yellow ring. Wrap a piece of raffia around the rings and tie a double knot at the back. Trim any excess raffia before repeating this process on the other side of the rings, securing them together.
  • Step 8Use the same process to attach the second ring to the third ring, trimming any excess raffia.
  • Step 9Attach a metal keyring and snap hook to the top of the rings. Push the split ring through the knots at the top. Your Bag Tag is now ready to snap onto your backpack!
