Step 1Rule up a 20 x 12cm rectangle on the Lino Tile. This will fit nicely on the front of a cotton pencil case. Once ruled up, use scissors to cut the piece out. Adult supervision is recommended when using scissors.
Step 2On a piece of paper, trace around the rectangle piece of Lino and then sketch a design for your pencil case within these lines. Think about positive and negative spaces and make sure the design isn’t too complicated. Once you are happy, flip the paper over and cover the back of your design in pencil. Lay the paper with your design facing up onto the rectangle of Lino, then trace over the design, pressing firmly. Remove the paper to see your design transferred onto the Lino below.
If your design includes words, tracing paper is a better way of transferring as you will need the words to be reversed onto your Lino Tile so they print the right way around!
Step 3Take a small ‘v’ Lino Tool and use this to firstly go around the outside of your shapes. Always keep one hand firmly on the tool and make sure your other hand is behind the tool. You don’t want to be carving towards your hand in case it slips!
Step 4Next work out which areas you want to carve away. We are carving out the background. Use the large ‘U’ Lino Tool to carve out large sections. When clearing areas, it’s always nice to carve in the same direction as you go. This results in a nicer looking print if you have any “noise” in the background.
Noise refers to the marks in a print made by peaks that form as you are carving the Lino. Sometimes the peaks are high enough to get inked by the roller and will actually come out when you print. Some people remove noise completely while others like the effect it adds to the design.
Step 5To finish the Lino Print, use the small ‘v’ tool to carve out any smaller details in your design.
Step 6Tape a piece of Acetate onto your work surface and pour a small amount of block printing ink onto the surface. Use the roller to spread the ink out by rolling horizontal and vertical lines. You only need to roll a square as wide as the roller to avoid any ink wastage. Once your roller is loaded with ink, roll it over the surface of the carved Lino. If using more than one colour in your design, be sure to only cover the particular section you want printed in that colour.
You will notice any ‘noise’ as you roll the ink on. If you don’t wish for this to print, then you can wipe the ink off with wet paper towel or you can carve it away.
Step 7Ink any additional colours on the Lino until the design is fully covered.
Step 8Put a scrap piece of paper into the pencil case to avoid any bleed through of ink as you print. Lay the pencil case on top of the Lino, being careful to position it in the centre. Press the pencil case firmly down with your hands, being careful it doesn’t move.
Step 9Use the back of a spoon or the heel of your hand and firmly rub the fabric to press it onto the Lino. The more thorough you are in this process, the better your print will come out. When you are happy, carefully peel the pencil case from the Lino to reveal your design!
Step 10Allow the pencil case to dry and then run a hot iron over your design. This will set your design slightly, however as we are using a water-based ink, the pencil case will not be able to be washed. The ink may also run if it gets wet so be careful when using it. Your pencil case is now ready to be used!
