Yarn Snowflake

  • Step 1Print out the snowflake template and tape the template to your table.
  • Step 2Cover the template with a piece of wax/baking paper and tape it down as well.
  • You could change the template size if you would prefer a smaller snowflake, however you will also need to adjust your string lengths.
  • Step 4Cut six pieces of string 24cm long, six pieces 15cm long, one piece 20cm long and one piece 6cm long.
  • Step 5Place enough glue into your disposable cup to cover a piece of string. Starting with the 6cm piece of string, saturate it with glue and wipe off any excess by sliding your thumb and finger down it. Place this piece around the centre circle of the template making sure the ends meet.
  • You need to overlap the beginning and the end of the piece of string.
  • Step 7Take a piece of the 24cm string, saturate it with glue, and squeeze out the excess. Lay it along the template and then repeat with remaining five pieces along each of the long sections.
  • Step 8Take a piece of the 15cm string and after saturating with glue, lay it along the shorter sections of the template. Repeat this with the remaining five pieces of string.
  • Always try and get the ends of each piece of string to touch an adjoining piece as closely as possible. Don’t worry if it doesn’t match the template exactly, just make sure the ends are well attached!
  • Step 10Carefully thread the 20cm piece of string through one of the end loops of the snowflake and tie into a double knot.
  • Step 11Put a dab of glue on each “joint” or connecting spot, to help reinforce them and then allow the snowflake to dry completely before moving on to the next step.
  • Allowing the string to dry first prevents the colour seeping into the string frame.
  • Step 13Once the snowflake is completely dry, use glue to start filling in some sections of snowflake starting from the centre.
  • Step 14After filling in a section, add a small amount of watercolour paint and mix it in with your paintbrush.
  • You may like to use different colours or add glitter to some of the sections!
  • Step 16Leave the snowflake to completely dry and then slowly and carefully peel it off the wax paper. Your beautiful snowflake is ready to hang!
