Step 1Roll out 100g of clay and shape it into a square approximately 8x8cm.
Step 2Use a scratch board tool to pierce a hole in each of the corners, then another 3 holes along each of the edges, until there are holes all the way around. Use your finger to smooth out the back. Allow the clay to air dry.
Step 3Paint the clay square gold and allow to dry.
Step 4Face the square on an angle so it is more like a diamond shape. Use a pencil to draw the Chinese symbol "Fu" onto the middle of the diamond. This is one of the most famous Chinese characters widely used for decorations and is the ultimate good luck character in the Chinese language. Paint over it in red once you are happy with its position. Allow to dry.
Step 5Take a chenille stem and loop the end through the left corner hole, wrapping it around itself to secure. Start threading the chenille stem from the back through to the front of the next hole, leaving a small loop out to the side. Continue to create loops in this way, securing the end of the chenille stem onto itself once finished. Take another chenille stem and continue around the diamond, adding more chenille stems as you go until all the holes have been threaded.
Step 6Next create a tassel! Take 3m of red embroidery thread and wrap it in a figure 8 motion around your thumb and pinky finger as shown. Pinch it in the middle and remove from your hand, placing it on the table in front of you. Take 20cm of embroidery thread and tie one end tightly around the centre of the wrapped thread. The other end will be used to tie the tassel onto the diamond in step 7. Pick up the bundle of thread folding the looped ends down and pinching the centre at the top. Use 10cm of thread to wrap around the top, holding it in place, then cut the looped ends open to create the tassel. Trim as needed. Adult supervision is recommended when using scissors.
Step 7Take 30cm of thread and loop it through the top hole, tying it at the top to create a hanger. Finish your ornament by tying the tassel through the bottom hole. Your Good Fortune Ornament is now ready to hang!
