Step 1Paint your papier mache book box with black paint and allow to dry. The black will make the colours of the quilling paper really pop! Use a gold paint marker to colour the side walls of the box gold – like the gold pages of a beautiful old book.
Step 2Use a scrap piece of paper to plan out a design for the top of your memory box.
Step 3Use quilling paper and a quilling tool to create the elements of your design. A quilling board can also help to create different shapes.
Step 4Arrange your quilled pieces in place on top of the memory box. Once happy with the positioning, use PVA glue to glue everything in place. Allow to dry.
Step 5Use the gold paint marker to add in any extra design elements.
Step 6Take a piece of cover paper and rule a line down the middle lengthways, followed by three lines across the width at the 90, 180 & 270mm points. Accordion fold along the three lines then use scissors to cut down the middle line so you have two accordion folded strips. Adult supervision is recommended when using scissors. Glue the small tab end of one strip onto the large tab end of the other, making sure to keep the consistent accordion fold going. Allow to dry.
Step 7Add your treasured memories to the paper strip. Record one memory in each panel sketching in pencil first, then adding colour with watercolour – just like the illustrations in ‘The Truck Cat’. Allow to dry.
You may want to add photos to your panels instead or do a combination of drawings and photos!
Step 8Glue the back of the last panel of your folded paper to the base of your memory box. Allow to dry before folding the paper into the box.
Step 9Cut a 10cm piece of macrame cord. Create a loop and tuck it under the small flap which will be at the top of the folded paper piece. Glue the small flap to the back of the larger square to hold the cord in place. Allow to dry.
Step 10Your Quilled Memory Box is now ready to use and display! Use the loop to pull out the panels of paper displaying your precious memories!
