Step 1Choose a character from the ‘Phonobet’ book or think of your own character based on the sounds they might make. Your character could use consonant sounds like a Robot using the sounds made by the letters “w, l, r, y” or a Nanna using sounds made by the letters “m, n, ng”. Your character might use vowel sounds like a Pirate that make the sounds “ay, ee, igh, oy” or a Zombie using sounds like “ar, or, er”.
Step 2Think about your chosen character and the design you might like to create. Download the accessories template provided and print onto white cardboard. You could also draw your own accessories onto white cardboard. Use scrap paper to plan your design then sketch it onto a wooden person.
Step 3Attach the wooden feet to your wooden person using tacky glue for permanent assembly. Allow to dry.
Step 4Use your choice of paint or markers to decorate your wooden character design and your chosen accessories. Allow to dry if needed. Cut out your cardboard accessories. Adult supervision is recommended when using scissors. Attach your accessories with glue to bring your character to life. Allow to dry.
Step 5Cut out a speech bubble shape and write in the sounds that your character makes. Glue the shape to your character and allow to dry. Alternatively, you can write the sounds on the back of the wooden shape.
Step 6Your Phonobet Character is now complete! You might like to make a few characters to explore even more sounds!
