DIY Book Week Costume: Caterpillar Crown

Step 1Take a red piece of A3 cardboard. Cut two strips down the long length of the cardboard, each measuring 12cm wide. Adult supervision is recommended when using scissors.
Step 2Overlap the short ends of the strips and glue them together. This will create one long strip. Allow to dry.
Step 3Wrap the strip around your head so that it fits on top of your head like a crown. Allow the ends to overlap slightly and cut off the excess. Glue in place and allow to dry. This will be the caterpillar’s head!
Step 4Cut two circles from a yellow piece of cardboard, making sure they are small enough to fit on the front of the headpiece. Cut two circles from a piece of green card making sure they are slightly smaller than the yellow circles. Don’t worry about the circles being perfectly round - you want them to have an organic look just like Eric Carle’s artwork!
Step 5Glue the green circles into the middle of the yellow circles to create the eyes. Glue the eyes to the front of the caterpillar’s head. Allow to dry.
Step 6Take a purple sheet of cardboard and cut out two antenna-shaped pieces. Glue these onto the inside of the headpiece so they stick up from the top of the head, above the eyes. Allow to dry.
Step 7Your Caterpillar Crown headpiece is now ready to wear! You could finish the outfit by dressing completely in green or you could even cut large green circles from cardboard and stick them down the front of your clothes.
