Pom Pom Galah

Australia Day is just around the corner so let’s celebrate one of Australia’s cutest native birds - the Galah! Easily recognisable by their pink feathers, the Galah is a common sight in Australian backyards. Follow our step-by-step instructions to create an adorable Pom Pom Galah - or why not create a whole flock!
  • Step 1Use the template provided to cut out the 2 pom pom maker shapes from a sturdy cardboard such as an old box. Adult supervision is recommended when using scissors.
  • Step 2Cut a 13m length of pink yarn and a 13m length of white yarn.
  • Step 3Take the smaller of the pom pom makers and wrap the pink yarn from step 2 around the cardboard as shown. Make sure to wrap around the end with the split in it and keep the yarn wrapped as close to the top of the split as possible.
  • Step 4Once the pink yarn is completely wrapped, do the same with the white yarn, wrapping it next to the pink and closer to the end of the split as shown. It’s okay if they overlap in the middle.
  • Step 5Cut a 20cm length of white yarn and thread it through the split in the pom pom maker so there is an end on each side of the wrapped yarn. Tie the ends tightly around the middle of the wrapped yarn as shown.
  • Step 6Slide your scissors up between the pom pom maker and the yarn. Slide the scissors right to the edge and cut the looped ends of the yarn.
  • Step 7Repeat on the opposite side to release the yarn from the pom pom maker. You will now have a rough looking pom pom that is half pink and half white.
  • Step 8Trim the yarn to create a nice round pom pom. You will need to trim quite a bit off, so the pom pom is nice and full and fluffy! This will be the head of the Galah.
  • Step 9Cut a 50m length of pink yarn and wrap it around the larger pom pom maker. Wrap it around the split end as you did before, however this time you can wrap all the way along the split as shown.
  • Step 10Cut a 30cm length of pink yarn and thread it through the split in the pom pom maker so there is an end on each side of the wrapped yarn. Tie the ends tightly around the middle of the wrapped yarn as shown.
  • Step 11Cut the yarn from the pom pom maker and trim down the pom pom as you did before. This will be the body of the Galah!
  • Step 12Squeeze a good amount of tacky glue on top of the large pom pom body, then place the smaller pom pom head on top with the pink side facing down. Allow to dry.
  • Step 13Take a grey foam sheet and cut out beak, crest, wing and feet pieces using our image as guide. You can get as creative as you like with these, but you will need to base the pieces on the size of your pom poms.
  • Use a pencil to draw the shapes onto the foam, then hold against the pom poms to gauge the size of your pieces before cutting out.
  • Step 14Take a pink piece of foam and cut out some accent pieces for the Galah’s wings. Glue them in place on top of the grey foam wing pieces. Allow to dry.
  • Step 15Attach the beak and crest foam pieces to the pom pom head by squeezing tacky glue into the yarn and carefully pushing the foam pieces into place. The glue will not have dried completely, so be sure to handle the pom poms carefully.
  • Step 16 Carefully press your finger into the pom pom on either side of the head to create a small opening. Add glue and fix the wiggle eyes in place to complete the Galah’s face.
  • Step 17Add a generous amount of glue to the sides of the body and glue the wings in place. You should be able to gently squeeze them so they stay in position while they dry.
  • Step 18To complete your Galah, place the foam feet side by side and add a generous amount of tacky glue to the top of each. Carefully lift the pom pom body, making sure the head and features stay in place, and place it on top of the feet. Allow to dry completely.
  • Step 19Your Pom Pom Galah is now ready to display! You could create a whole flock of Galahs or experiment with different coloured yarn to create other Australian birds!
