Step 1Download and print out the templates provided onto white copy paper.
Step 2To make the bow, cut out the printed template pieces and place them onto your choice of coloured felt. Adult supervision is recommended when using scissors. We have chosen to use black felt. Use a white marker to trace around the template onto the felt. (If you are using a lighter coloured felt, you can use a pencil or black marker for tracing). Cut out the felt shapes.
Step 3Thread a 40cm length of black embroidery thread through a needle. Tie a knot with the loose ends. Fold each end of the large bow shape inwards to join the narrow ends together in the middle. Push the needle up from the front of the bow towards the top, through both layers of felt. Thread the needle back down through the felt on the other side of the join. Continue to create straight stitches perpendicular to the join until you reach the bottom of the bow. Tie a knot to secure the thread and trim the excess.
Step 4Wrap the felt bow centre piece around the middle of your bow so it covers the stitching and the ends sit at the back of your bow. Stitch the ends of the bow centre piece together using your needle and thread. Tie a knot to secure and trim any excess thread.
Step 5To make the hat, cut out a 10 x 10cm square and a 5 x 22cm rectangle from a sheet of black felt.
Step 6Bend the rectangle felt piece so the short edges overlap and you have a cylinder shape. Join the ends together using a running stitch. Tie a knot to secure and trim any excess thread. http://cleverpat.ch/CP_RS
Step 7Place the cylinder shape onto the centre of your felt square piece. Trace around the inside edge of the cylinder using a white marker.
Step 8Using a needle and thread, stitch the two pieces together using the circle as a guide. Thread the needle through from inside the cylinder about 1cm down from the square piece. Thread the needle through the square on the outside of the white marker line. Thread the needle back through the square on the inside of the white line and the felt cylinder piece. Repeat this stitching method all the way around the hat leaving a 1cm space between each stitch. Tie a knot on the inside of the hat to secure the thread and trim any excess.
Step 9To make the tassel, cut one 4m and one 40cm length of embroidery thread. Fold the 4m length of thread in half 6 times. Wrap the 40cm length around the top third of the gathered thread so the loops are secure. Tie a knot to secure and trim the excess thread. Cut the bottom loops to create the tassel. Trim the lengths if needed.
Step 10Cut a 30cm length of thread and thread through some of the looped ends of your tassel. Make sure the tassel is in the centre of the thread then tie a knot to hold in place. Using your needle, thread the loose ends through a corner of your hat and tie a double knot to secure in place. Trim any excess thread.
Step 11To make the certificate, cut a 20 x 12cm piece from white cardboard. Roll the cardboard into a cylinder and tape in place.
Step 12Cut one 15cm and one 30cm length of red ribbon. Wrap the 15cm length around your certificate. Use tape to secure to the back where the cardboard joins. Create a bow using the 30cm length of ribbon. Use a glue dot to attach the bow to the front of the certificate onto the ribbon. Trim the ends of the bow if needed.
Step 13Use glue dots to attach your hat, bow and certificate to your bear. Alternatively, you can stitch the felt onto your bear using embroidery thread if you would like them to be permanently secured.
Step 14Your Graduation Bear is now ready for your end of year celebrations or for your classmates to sign!
